At BISON, we are proud to have partnered with The Big Cat Sanctuary since their rebrand in 2016. As a conservation-focused organisation, the sanctuary recognises the importance of educating the next generation about the challenges faced by big cats worldwide. We were thrilled to be entrusted with the task of bringing their newly built Animal Resource Centre (ARC) to life through visually stimulating graphics and signage.
In this success story, we will share our journey in transforming the sanctuary’s classroom into an engaging hub that sparks curiosity and inspires young minds. Creating an Engaging Learning Environment: The ARC, completed in 2022, houses a purpose-built classroom designed to host schools and other groups.
Our mission was to transform the area into a visually captivating space that would capture the attention of children passing through. Leveraging our expertise in printing signage and office graphics, we embarked on the challenge of integrating existing printed assets, such as posters, leaflets, and books, into a cohesive and vibrant display that aligned with the sanctuary’s brand.
Following our proven 4-step BISON Blueprint, we visited the ARC to understand its usage and listen to Education and Sustainability Officer Gill Garbo’s main objectives for it at the sanctuary.
Armed with this valuable insight, we presented ‘imagine-it’ super-imposed visuals, showcasing various design concepts and mood boards. Our goal was to bring the printed literature to life on the walls, creating an immersive and captivating, tactile environment that would ignite curiosity and engagement.
One standout feature of the classroom was a wall with a window overlooking the sanctuary’s surgery area, where life-saving treatments are administered to the resident cats. BISON proposed painting this wall black and incorporating branded acrylic graphics to create a theatrical ambiance, drawing attention to the dramatic activities within. Subtle orange accents on the wall provided a striking backdrop for future hero shots and added visual interest.
To bring the vision to life, we implemented a range of services, including ‘imagine-it’ super-imposed visuals, a full impact door wrap, printed and contour-cut graphics, a bespoke design, print and cut cat timeline, and an acrylic logo. Each element was meticulously crafted to align with the sanctuary’s brand identity, ensuring consistency and visual appeal throughout the space.
When the ARC was built, the classroom was incorporated into it. It was a blank shell – it wasn’t the warmest, most inviting environment. We have such a range of ages in the room and I was really keen to make the most out of it.
I felt BISON were best placed to do the work because of their commitment to sustainability – it really aligns with what we’re doing at the sanctuary too. Right from the initial meeting, BISON took time to understand what I wanted to see in the room and helped me to get all my messages across.
It looks absolutely amazing in there now, its a completely different room!
The door wrap looks absolutely stunning and all the children who walk through gasp when they initially see it – its exactly what I wanted to happen! Its been great to see kids interacting with the activities – measuring their hands, touching all the walls and everything has been really durable.
When you see the initial visuals, it’s so hard to imagine what the end product is going to look like. To see it coming to life during the install was so incredible – I tried to leave them alone!
We had a class in before the work was done and they came back again after and they couldn’t believe how different it was!
